Bristle grass meadows and floral splendour
On the Wasserkuppe you can find the characteristic bristle grass meadows of the Rhön. Here, but also along the paths and in the woods, many different, partly very rare and strictly protected plants such as daphne, Turk’s-head lily or arnica can be discovered.
Hotspot of biological diversity in Germany
Few regions in Central Europe are as rich in plant species and plant communities in a comparable area as the Rhön. It is one of the primary objectives of the UNESCO biosphere reserve to preserve this biological diversity, since according to the national biodiversity strategy it is one of 30 hotspots of biological diversity in Germany. What’s in bloom? And when?
Here at an altitude of almost 1000 metres, the vegetation starts later in the year than in the valleys. So it can happen that the Rhine-Main area is already in full bloom until the first early bloomers appear on the Wasserkuppe. The end of summer is then marked by the faded willowherbs.
- Do not enter the marked areas of the airfield.
- Other particularly sensitive areas, which are also marked, may not be entered either.
- Do not damage, tear off, cut or dig up any plants!
