The wildlife of the High Rhön
The black grouse is probably the most famous animal of the Rhön region. A small population is still native to the area.
On the Wasserkuppe, in addition to jackdaws, skylarks, tits, and other wild birds, mainly birds of prey such as the common buzzard, the red kite, or the peregrine falcon can be observed. Thanks to the network of hiking trails, visitors can observe animals without disturbing their habitats.
Even the wildlife native to the Rhön region can occasionally be spotted on the Wasserkuppe. Especially in the mornings and evenings, deer, foxes, rabbits, or even a badger can be observed along the edges of the forest.
Butterflies: Colorful diversity along the roadside
Those who keep their eyes open while exploring the Wasserkuppe massif can discover many different butterfly species during the summer months. With a little patience and suitable equipment, these delicate creatures can also be photographed. It is thanks in particular to the high biodiversity that so many different species can still be found here.
