The largest moor in the Rhön
Located directly at the tripoint of Hesse, Bavaria, and Thuringia is the largest moor in the Rhön region. The 60-hectare area has been a nature reserve for many years, allowing a very special flora and fauna to develop here.
The easiest way to reach the Black Moor from the Wasserkuppe is by car via Wüstensachsen and Seiferts. On foot or by bike, the route via the so-called "Lange Rhön" is recommended: From the Wasserkuppe, the path leads past the Red Moor without too many changes in elevation, and continues via the Schwabenhimmel at the Heidelstein and the Schornhecke to the Black Moor.
Circular trail and observation tower
A snack bar and a small shop near the parking area offer refreshments. The boardwalk allows for both longer and shorter hikes through the Black Moor. The observation tower provides a worthwhile panoramic view.
A visit to the Black Moor can be combined with a short walk from the parking lot to the tripoint of Hesse, Bavaria and Thuringia.
Tip: Nature trail through the Black Moor
The boardwalk also allows people with limited mobility to discover the moorland landscape.
Entry to the "Schwarzes Moor" nature reserve is free.
