Schafstein

Only about 2 kilometers east of the Wasserkuppe, visitors will find a geological feature with a beautiful view.

Beneath the scree slope of the Schafstein lies a rock glacier. Even on days with an air temperature of 30 degrees Celsius, the air flowing out at the foot of this scree glacier is slightly below freezing.

Once you've conquered the short but steep climb, a bench invites you to rest. From up here, you have a unique view across the basalt boulder field sloping to the northwest, towards the Wasserkuppe massif and far into the northern part of the Rhön Mountains.

Schafstein: Eastern neighbor of the Wasserkuppe

You can reach the Schafstein on foot from the Wasserkuppe by following the hiking trail along the airfield at the lower end of the P5 parking lot.

Once you reach the end, turn right and then left at the next intersection. You'll now see the basalt boulder field at Schafstein slightly to your left.

Schafstein is considered a hidden gem for atmospheric sunset photos. It's advisable to bring a headlamp for the return journey.
