Red Moor

The Rote Moor (Red Moor), covering 50 hectares, is the second largest raised bog in the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve. Peat was extracted here for 175 years until 1984. Thanks to renaturation measures, the peripheral areas in particular now offer fascinating insights into the typical moorland landscape.

Rotes Moor Nature Reserve

From the parking lot, you can first reach the impressive moorland lake on foot. At the shelter, a roughly one-kilometer-long boardwalk begins, leading through the southern part of the moor to an observation tower. This path is also suitable for people with limited mobility.

It's worth taking some time to study the numerous information panels: Here, visitors can learn many details about this extraordinary ecosystem with its specific flora and fauna. The entire circular moorland trail is approximately 3 kilometers long.

Tip: Hike from the Wasserkuppe to the Red Moor

From the Wasserkuppe, you can reach the Rote Moor (Red Moor) by following the premium hiking trail "Hochrhöner" southwards for about 4 kilometers. The hike from the Gersfeld district of Sandberg through the Kaskadenschlucht gorge up to the high moor is also very appealing. Sturdy footwear is recommended for this route.

The Rote Moor can be reached by car via the B278. The car park at the "Haus am Roten Moor", between Wüstensachsen and Bischofsheim an der Rhön, also offers sanitary facilities, a kiosk and further information boards.

Entry to the "Rotes Moor" nature reserve is free.
