The “Pillars of Remembrance” show the coats of arms of the three air force units and are intended to commemorate the soldiers as well as peace and freedom.
The memorial is dedicated to the work of the German, American and British Air Forces as a silent vigil on the Wasserkuppe during the Cold War.
“The Silent Watch – Guardians of Freedom”
The “Silent Sentinel – Guardian of Freedom” was understood to be above all the American, but also the British and German air force units, which made a significant contribution to securing peace in Europe between 1945 and 1998 with their airspace surveillance service on the Wasserkuppe.
At times, up to 800 soldiers were on duty on the Wasserkuppe. In particular, these were the 889th Signal Unit of the Royal Air Force (radio unit of the British Air Force), the 616th Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron of the United State Air Force Europe (warning and guiding squadron of the US Air Force in Europe) and the German Federal Air Force.
