Fuchssteine natural monument

Ancient basalt in the forest

If you hike from the Wasserkuppe to the Rotes Moor (Red Moor), you will pass the Fuchsstein (also Fuchssteine). These are remnants from about 15 million years ago, when volcanic activity in the Rhön region gradually subsided.

An information panel on site explains the processes that led to the formation of this basalt formation. The Fuchsstein, as well as other basalt rocks in this forest, offer exciting photo opportunities.

Especially in rain and snow, a certain degree of sure-footedness is required because the path here leads partly over rocky terrain.

This is how you get to the Fuchssteine (Fox Stones).

From the parking lot at the Fulda spring, the hiking trail leads downhill and then to the left. After a short hike, you reach the Fuchssteine rock formations before the trail crosses the B 284 highway.
