A cozy spot between Wasserkuppe and Guckaisee
Slightly off the beaten track, well hidden in the “Goldloch”, you can discover the Lütter spring on a hike in the southwestern part of the Wasserkuppe.
A good starting point for a hike to the Lütter spring is the parking lot at Guckaisee. From here, simply follow the gently ascending hiking trail in a northeasterly direction until, at a right-hand bend, a sign points left towards the spring. To your south rises the Eube mountain, and to your left, the view soon opens up to the rugged southern face of the Pferdskopf mountain and across Guckaisee towards Ebersburg.
Lütterquelle: Ideal for a short break
From the hiking trail, a few steps lead down to the spring, where hikers can refresh themselves and rest on a bench before continuing uphill or downhill. This place is also known as the "Gold Hole".
The Lütter stream is fed by three outlets; the largest of these was captured by the Poppenhausen Rhön Club. The Rhön Club had repeatedly renovated the small facility.
The course of the Lütter river is the subject of a poem by Ludwig Mihm, which can be read on a sign directly at the source.
Poem by Ludwig Mihm
In this gold mine I spring forth,
I received the name Lütter,
I swim in the Guckaisee.
I eat a lot of people and animals
I hurry through Poppenhausen,
I linger in the Lüttertal valley,
I inherit many a small stream,
I die in the bosom of the Fulda.
