Abtsrodaer Kuppe

Distinctive basalt peak in the north

On the northern slope of the Wasserkuppe rises the striking basalt peak of the Abtsrodaer Kuppe (904,8m). Here, the characteristic bowl-shaped layering of the basalt is still clearly visible.

The hill, also known as "Abtsroder Kuppe," is, like the Pferdskopf to the southwest, not only a popular spot for photography and views to the north. Model aircraft enthusiasts also take advantage of the updrafts when the wind is from the north, which sometimes keep their models aloft for hours.

The paragliding launch site "Abtsrodaer Kuppe" lies between the basalt summit and the fairytale meadow forest. Paragliders and hang gliders launch from here year-round in north/northeast winds for flights into the slope lift, thermals, or down into the valley.

Fulda-Werra watershed

Part of the Fulda-Werra watershed runs across the Abtsroda hilltop. Water from streams flowing westward from the hilltop reaches the Weser River via the Haardt and Lütter streams and the Fulda River. Water from streams flowing northward also reaches the Weser via the Schlichtwasser, Brandbach, and Ulster streams and the Werra River. (Source: Wikipedia)

Abtsrodaer Kuppe: Easily accessible on foot

The rugged cliffs can be easily reached on foot in a few minutes' walk from the summer toboggan run. The path leads above the Märchenwiesenhütte (Fairytale Meadow Hut) to the right, initially across the parking lot.

Continue straight ahead along the meadow path until the path branches off to the right towards the slightly lower summit.

Sturdy footwear and sure footing are required in the summit area due to the rocky terrain and steep mountain slopes!
